Niruha basti Kalpa: Decoction enema recipes

Vatahara Basti Kalpa: Recipes to cures diseases of vata origin

बलां गुडूचीं त्रिफलां सरास्नां द्विपञ्चमूलं च
पलोन्मितानि ।
अष्टौ फलान्यर्धतुलां च मांसाच्छागात्पचेदप्सु
चतुर्थशेषम् ॥ १ ॥
पूतो यवानीफलबिल्वकुष्ठवचाशताह्वाघनपिप्पलीनाम् ।
कल्कैर्गुडक्षौद्रघृतैः सतैलैर्युक्तः सुखोष्णो लवणान्वितश्च ॥ २ ॥
वस्तिः परं सर्वगदप्रमाथी स्वस्थे हितो जीवनबृंहणश्च ।
वस्तौ च यस्मिन् पठितो न कल्कः सर्वत्र दद्यादमुमेव तत्र ॥ ३ ॥
Balāṃ – Sida cordifolia, guḍūcīṃ – Tinospora cordifolia, Triphala (Haritaki – Terminalia chebula, Vibhitaki – Terminalia bellerica, Amalaki – Emblica officinalis), rāsnāṃ – Pluchea lanceolata, the two Pancamula – Bilva – Aegle marmelos, Agnimantha – Premnamucronata, Shyonaka – Oroxylum indicum, Patala – Stereospermumsuaveolens, Gambhari – Gmelina arborea, Shalaparni – Desomodiumgangeticum, Prishniparni – Urariapicta, Brihati – Solanum indicum, Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum, Gokshura – Tribulus terrestris, palonmitāni – each one Pala (48 g), Randia dumetorum eight by count, goat meat half tula (2.4 Kg) are boiled in four times their total quantity of water (9.6 litres) and decoction reduced to one fourth quantity the above decoction is filtered. Then paste of yavānī – Trachyspermum ammi, phala – Randia dumetorum, bilva – Aegle marmelos, kuṣṭha – Saussurea lappa, vacā – Acorus calamus, śatāhvā – Anethum sowa, ghana – Cyperus rotundus, pippalīnām – and Piper longum, guḍa – treacle, honey, ghee, oil and salt – (this is well churned with a churner to form a thick liquid of such a consistency that can pass through the nozzle attached to the enema bag) administered comfortably warm. This enema is best in curing all the diseases, beneficial to the healthy and is restorative and nourishing. In such recipes (of decoction enema) where (herbs for) Kalka (paste) are not mentioned, the herbs enumerated above may be made use of everywhere.

Niruha basti Kalpa: Decoction enema recipes

द्विपञ्चमूलस्य रसोऽम्लयुक्तः सच्छागमांसस्य सपूर्वपेष्यः ।
त्रिस्नेहयुक्तः प्रवरो निरूहः सर्वानिलव्याधिहरः प्रदिष्टः ॥ ४ ॥
Decoction of the two Pancamula, Brihat Panchamula
Bilva – Aegle marmelos
Agnimantha – Premna mucronata
Shyonaka – Oroxylum indicum
Patala – Stereospermum suaveolens
Gambhari – Gmelina arborea
Laghupañcamūla – Laghu Panchamula
Shalaparni – Desomodium gangeticum
Prishniparni – Uraria picta
Brihati – Solanum indicum
Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum
Gokshura – Tribulus terrestris
mixed with sour liquids such as fermented gruel (etc.), juice of Chaga Mamsa (goat meat) and paste of herbs mentioned earlier, added with the three fats (oil, ghee and muscle fat) forms a decoction enema, is best indicated for curing all diseases produced by Vata.

बलापटोलीलघुपञ्चमूलत्रायन्तिकैरण्डयवात्सुसिद्धात् ।
प्रस्थो रसाच्छागरसार्धयुक्तः साध्यः पुनः प्रस्थसमः स यावत् ॥ ५ ॥
प्रियङ्गुकृष्णाघनकल्कयुक्तः सतैलसर्पिर्मधुसैन्धवश्च ।
स्याद्दीपनो मांसबलप्रदश्च चक्षुर्बलं चोपदधाति सद्यः ॥ ६ ॥
One Prastha (768 ml) of the decoction of balā – Sida cordifolia, paṭolī – Trichosanthes dioica, laghupañcamūla – laghu Pancamula (Shalaparni – Desomodium gangeticum, Prishniparni – Urariapicta, Brihati – Solanum indicum, Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum, Gokshura – Tribulus terrestris), trāyantika – Thalictrum foliolosum, eraṇḍa – Ricinus communis and yavāt – Hordeum vulgare prepared with these herbs Mixed with half prastha (384 ml) of juice of goat flesh are boiled together until gets reduced to one prastha (768 ml) in quantity. Priyaṅgu – Callicarpa macrophylla, kṛṣṇā – Piper nigrum and ghana – Cyperus rotundus, oil, ghee, honey and rock salt aste is made out of above ingredients and added to previously prepared decoction (and administered
as an enema). It kindles digestion, gives strength to the muscles and bestows strength to the eyes (vision) immediately.

Niruha basti Kalpa : Decoction enema recipes for Vata and Kapha.

एरण्डमूलात्त्रिपलं पलाशात्तथा पलांशं लघुपञ्चमूलम् ।
रास्नाबलाछिन्नरुहाश्वगन्धापुनर्नवारग्वधदेवदारु ॥ ७ ॥
फलानि चाष्टौ सलिलाढकाभ्यां विपाचयेदष्टमशेषितेऽस्मिन् ।
वचाशताह्वाहपुषाप्रियङ्गुयष्टीकणावत्सकबीजमुस्तम् ॥ ८ ॥
दद्यात्सुपिष्टं सहतार्क्ष्यशैलमक्षप्रमाणं लवणांशयुक्तम् ।
समाक्षिकस्तैलयुतः समूत्रो वस्तिर्जयेल्लेखनदीपनोऽसौ ॥ ९ ॥
जङ्घोरुपादत्रिकपृष्ठकोष्ठहृद्गुह्यशूलं गुरुतां विबन्धम् ।
गुल्माश्मवर्ध्मग्रहणीगुदोत्थांस्तास्तांश्च रोगान् कफवातजातान् ॥ १० ॥
Three Pala (144 grams) of roots of Ricinus communis, the same quantity (144 grams) of roots of Butea monosperma, one Pala (48 grams) each of Laghupañcamūlam – laghu Pancamula
Shalaparni – Desomodium gangeticum
Prishniparni – Uraria picta
Brihati – Solanum indicum
Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum
Gokshura – Tribulus terrestris
Rāsnā – Pluchea lanceolata
Balā – Sida cordifolia
Chinnaruhā – Tinospora cordifolia
Aśvagandhā – Withania somnifera
Punarnavā – Boerhavia diffusa
Aragvadha – Cassia fistula

Phalāni – Randia dumetorum
eight (by count) are all boiled in two Adhaka (6,146 ml) of water and decoction reduced to one – eight quantities. To it are added a paste of one Aksha (12 grams) each of Acorus calamus, śatāhvā – Anethum sowa, hapuṣā – Juniperus communis, priyaṅgu – Callicarpa macrophylla, yaṣṭī – Glycyrrhiza glabra, kaṇā – Piper longum, seeds of Holarrhena antidysenterica, mustam – Cyperus rotundus, given along along with properly ground (powdered) Emerald, added with one Aksa (12 grams) each of rock salt honey, oil and cow urine and administered as enema. This is scraping, kindles digestive strength, cures the pain and heaviness of the calves, thighs, feet, sacral region, upper back, alimentary tract, heart and the genitals, constipation, abdominal tumour, urinary stones, enlargement of the scrotum, duodenal diseases, hemorrhoids and other diseases born from Kapha – vata (increased together).

Pittahara Basti Kalpa: Recipes for diseases of Pitta origin

यष्ट्याह्वलोध्राभयचन्दनैश्च शृतं पयोऽग्र्यं कमलोत्पलैश्च ।
सशर्कराक्षौद्रघृतं सुशीतं पित्तामयान् हन्ति सजीवनीयम् ॥ ११ ॥
Milk boiled with following herbs is best, yaṣṭyāhva – Glycyrrhiza glabra, lodhra – Symplocos racemosa, abhaya – Vetiveria zizanioides, candanai – Santalum album, kamala – Nelumbo nucifera and utpalai – Nymphaea alba, with sugar, honey and ghee and administered cold is best to cure diseases of Pitta origin and is restorative.

रास्नां वृषं लोहितिकामनन्तां बलां कनीयस्तृणपञ्चमूल्यौ ।
गोपाङ्गनाचन्दनपद्मकर्द्धियष्ट्याह्वलोध्राणि पलार्धकानि ॥ १२ ॥
निःक्वाथ्य तोयेन रसेन तेन शृतं पयोऽर्धाढकमम्बुहीनम् ।
जीवन्तिमेदर्द्धिवरीविदारीवीराद्विकाकोलिकसेरुकाभिः ॥ १३ ॥
सितोपलाजीवकपद्मरेणुप्रपौण्डरीकोत्पलपुण्डरीकैः ।
लोध्रात्मगुप्तामधुयष्टिकाभिर्नागाह्वमुञ्जातकचन्दनैश्च ॥ १४ ॥
पिष्टैर्घृतक्षौद्रयुतैर्निरूहं ससैन्धवं शीतलमेव दद्यात् ।
प्रत्यागते धन्वरसेन शालीन् क्षीरेण वाऽद्यात्परिषिक्तगात्रः ॥ १५ ॥
दाहातिसारप्रदरास्रपित्तहृत्पाण्डुरोगान् विषमज्वरं च ।
सगुल्ममूत्रग्रहकामलादीन् सर्वामयान् पित्तकृतान्निहन्ति ॥ १६ ॥
Decoction is prepared with half – Pala (24 grams) each of rāsnāṃ – Pluchea lanceolata, vṛṣaṃ – Adhathoda vasica, lohitikām – Tecomella undulata, anantāṃ – Hemidesmus indicus, balāṃ – Sida cordifolia, herbs of Kaniya (Hrasva), Pancamula – Brihati – Solanum indicum, Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum, Gokshura – Tribulus terrestris, Shalaparni – Desmodium gangeticum, Prishniparni – Uraria picta and Trna Pancamula –
Kusha – Desmostachyabipinnata
Kasha – Saccharum spontaneum
Shara – Saccharum munja
Darbha – Imperatacylindrica
Ikshu – Saccharum officinarum, gopāṅganā – Hemidesmus indicus, candana – Santalum album, padmaka – Prunus cerasoides, ṛddhi – Habenaria intermedia, yaṣṭyāhva – Glycyrrhiza glabra and dhrāṇi – Symplocos racemosa, it is then processed with water and meat soup, added with half – Adhaka (1536.5 ml) of cow milk and heated till there is no water (water evaporates living back only milk) next, a paste of jīvanti – Leptadenia reticulata, the two meda (Meda – Polygonatum cirrhifolium, Mahameda – Polygonatum verticillatum), ṛddhi – Habenaria intermedia, varī – Asparagus racemosus, vidārī – Pueraria tuberosa, vīrā – Fritillaria roylei the two Kakoli (Kakoli – Fritillaria roylei, KshiraKakoli – Roscoea purpurea), kaserukābhiḥ – Scripus grossus, sugar candy, jīvaka – Malaxis acuminate, Pollen of Nelumbo nucifera, prapauṇḍarīka – Nymphaea lotus, utpala – Nymphaea alba, red variety of Nymphaea lotus, lodhra – Symplocos racemosa, ātmaguptā – Mucuna pruriens, madhuyaṣṭikābhi: – Glycyhrrhiza glabra, nāgāhva – Mesua ferrea, muñjātaka – Orchis latifolia and candanaiśca – Santalum album, with ghee, honey and rock salt, in cold state it is administered as an enema. If it comes out quickly, the patient is made to eat Sali (rice) along with juice of meat of animals of desert, or with milk after giving shower to the patient’s body, it destroys (cures) burning sensation, diarrhoea, menorrhagia, bleeding disorders, heart diseases, anaemia, irregular fevers, abdominal tumor, obstruction of the urine, jaundice and all other diseases produced by Pitta.

Kaphahara Basti Kalpa: Recipes for diseases of Kapha origin

कोशातकारग्वधदेवदारुमूर्वाश्वदंष्ट्राकुटजार्कपाठाः ।
पक्त्वा कुलत्थान् बृहतीं च तोये रसस्य तस्य प्रसृता दश स्युः ॥ १७ ॥
तान् सर्षपैलामदनैः सकुष्ठैरक्षप्रमाणैः प्रसृतैश्च युक्तान् ।
क्षौद्रस्य तैलस्य फलाह्वयस्य क्षारस्य तैलस्य च सार्षपस्य ॥ १८ ॥
दद्यान्निरूहं कफरोगिताय मन्दाग्नये चाशनविद्विषे च ।
Kośātaka – Luffa acutangula, āragvadha – Cassia fistula, devadāru – Cedrus deodara, mūrvā – Marsdenia tenacissima, śvadaṃṣṭrā – Tribulus terrestris, kuṭaja – Holarrhena antidysenterica, arka – Calotropis gigantea, pāṭhāḥ – Cissampelos pareira, kulatthān – Dolichos biflorus, bṛhatīṃ – Solanum indicum are boiled in water and ten prasruta of (960 ml) decoction prepared. To this are added the paste of Brassica nigra, elā – Elettaria cardamomum, madanaiḥ – Randia dumetorum and sakuṣṭhai – Saussurea lappa, each one Aksa (12 grams) quantity 96 g / ml of each of honey, oil prepared from Randia dumetorum and other herbs ksara taila (oil prepared with alkali of Hordeum vulgare) and oil of sārṣapasya – Brassica nigra and administered as a decoction enema for patients suffering from kapha diseases, he who has poor digestion and who has hatred (aversion) to food.

Mridu Basti Kalpa: Enema recipes of mild potency

वक्ष्ये मृदून् स्नेहकृतो निरूहान् सुखोचितानां प्रसृतैः पृथक् तु ॥ १९ ॥
अथेमान् सुकुमाराणां निरूहान् स्नेहनान् मृदून् ।
कर्मणा विप्लुतानां च वक्ष्यामि प्रसृतैः पृथक् ॥ २० ॥
क्षीराद्द्वौ प्रसृतौ कार्यौ मधुतैलघृतात्त्रयः ।
खजेन मथितो वस्तिर्वातघ्नो बलवर्णकृत् ॥ २१ ॥
एकैकः प्रसृतस्तैलप्रसन्नाक्षौद्रसर्पिषाम् ।
बिल्वादिमूलक्वाथाद्द्वौ कौलत्थाद्द्वौ स वातजित् ॥ २२ ॥
पटोलनिम्बभूतीकरास्नासप्तच्छदाम्भसः ।
प्रसृतः पृथगाज्याच्च वस्तिः सर्षपकल्कवान् ॥ २३ ॥
स पञ्चतिक्तोऽभिष्यन्दकृमिकुष्ठप्रमेहहा ।
चत्वारस्तैलगोमूत्रदधिमण्डाम्लकाञ्जिकात् ॥ २४ ॥
प्रसृताः सर्षपैः पिष्टैर्विट्सङ्गानाहभेदनः ।
पयस्येक्षुस्थिरारास्नाविदारीक्षौद्रसर्पिषाम् ॥ २५ ॥
एकैकः प्रसृतो वस्तिः कृष्णाकल्को वृषत्वकृत् ।
I will now describe recipes of decoction enema which are mild, mixed with fats, for the use of persons of tender constitution and of one Prasrta (80 ml) in quantity. The following decoction – enema recipes which are mild, mixed with fats, useful for persons of tender constitution and those who are unable to undergo the full course of purificatory therapies, I advise use of each of one Prasrta (96 ml), in quantity. Two Prasta (192 ml) of milk, three Prasrta (288 grams) of honey, oil and ghee mixed together and churned with a churner and administered as an enema, mitigates vata and bestows strength and colour to the body. One prasrta (96 g) each of oil, scum of beer, honey and ghee mixed with two Prasrta (192 ml) of decoction of bilvādi mūla – bilvadi Pancamula – Bael tree – Aegle marmelos, Agnimantha – Premnamucronata, Shyonaka – Oroxylum indicum, Patala – Stereospermumsuaveolens, Gambhari – Gmelina arborea and two Prasrta (192 ml) of decoction of Kulattha – Dolichos biflorus. This enema mitigates Vata. One Prasrta (96 ml) of decoction of paṭola – Trichosanthes dioica, nimba – Azadirachta indica, bhūtīka – Trachyspermum ammi, rāsnā – Pluchea lanceolata and saptacchada – Alstonia scholaris,­ mixed one Prasrta (96 g) of ghee and paste of Brassica nigra, this enema known as Pancatika basti cures conjunctivitis, worms, skin disease and Diabetes. Four Prasrta (384 ml) of oil, cow urine, watery portion of curd and sour gruel added with the paste of sarṣapaiḥ – Brassica nigra, one Prastha in quantity relieves obstruction of feces and flatulence. One Prasrta each of payasya – Impomoea paniculata, ikṣu – Saccharum officinarum, sthirā – Desmodium gangeticum, rāsnā – Pluchea lanceolata, vidārī – Pueraria tuberosa, honey, ghee added with the paste of kṛṣṇā – Piper nigrum and used as an enema produces virilification (increases sexual vigour).

Siddha Bastis

सिद्धवस्तीन् अतो वक्ष्ये सर्वदा यान् प्रयोजयेत् ॥ २६ ॥
निर्व्यापदो बहुफलान् बलपुष्टिकरान् सुखान् ।
After explaining various Prasruta Basti recipes, let us see Siddha Bastis, which definitely yield good results, which do not have complications, which have multiple benefits, which improve strength and immunity and improve nourishment, which brings comfort.

Madhutailika Basti

मधुतैले समे कर्षः सैन्धवाद्द्विपिचुर्मिशिः ॥ २७ ॥
एरण्डमूलक्वाथेन निरूहो माधुतैलिकः ।
रसायनं प्रमेहार्शःकृमिगुल्मान्त्रवृद्धिनुत् ॥ २८ ॥
Equal quantity of honey and sesame oil, 12 grams of rock salt, 2 Pichu (2 Karsha) 24 grams of Anethum sowa. along with decoction of eraṇḍamūla – root of Ricinus communis. This is called Madhutailika Basti which is a niruha vasti. It is anti aging, it relieves Prameha – urinary tract disorders, arśaḥ – haemorrhoids, kṛmi – worm infestation, gulma – abdominal tumour, antravṛddhinut – hernia.

Madhutailika Basti with Glycyrrhiza glabra

सयष्टीमधुकश्चैष चक्षुष्यो रक्तपित्तजित् ।
In the above explained Madhu tailika Basti, Glycyrrhiza glabra is added, this Basti improves eyesight, good for eyes, relieves bleeding disorders due to vitiated blood and Pitta.

Yapana Basti with Musta

यापनो घनकल्केन मधुतैलरसाज्यवान् ॥ २९ ॥
पायुजानूरुवृषणवस्तिमेहनशूलजित् ।
Yapana Basti is prepared with the bolus / paste of ghana – Cyperus rotundus, honey, sesame oil, meat soup ghee. This relieves pain related to anal region, knee, thigh, scrotum, urinary bladder and penis.

प्रसृतांशैर्घृतक्षौद्रवसातैलैः प्रकल्पयेत् ॥ ३० ॥
यापनं सैन्धवार्धाक्षहपुषार्धपलान्वितम् ।
Yapana Basti is prepared with 1 Prasruta (96 g) each of Ghee, honey, fat and sesame oil ½ Aksha (6 grams) of rock salt, Ardhapala – 24 grams of hapuṣa – Juniperus communis.

Yuktaratha Basti

एरण्डमूलनिःक्वाथो मधुतैलं ससैन्धवम् ॥ ३१ ॥
एष युक्तरथो वस्तिः सवचापिप्पलीफलः ।
Decoction of eraṇḍamūla – roots of Ricinus communis, along with honey, sesame oil, rock salt, vacā – Acorus calamus pippalī phalaḥ – and Piper longum is called Yutkaratha Basti.

Doshahara Basti

स क्वाथो मधुषड्ग्रन्थाशताह्वाहिङ्गुसैन्धवम् ॥ ३२ ॥ सुरदारु च रास्ना च वस्तिर्दोषहरः शिवः ।
Decoction of (root of Ricinus communis) along with honey, ṣaḍgranthā – Acorus calamus, śatāhvā – Anethum sowa, hiṅgu – Ferula foetida, Rock salt, suradāru – Cedrus deodara, rāsnā ca – Pluchea lanceolata, this Basti relieves Doshas is good and brings good health and luck.

Siddha Basti

पञ्चमूलस्य निःक्वाथस्तैलं मागधिका मधु ॥ ३३ ॥
ससैन्धवः समधुकः सिद्धबस्तिरिति स्मृतः ।
Decoction of pañcamūlasya – Panchamoola (group of five roots), Sesame oil, māgadhikā – Piper longum, honey, rock salt and madhukaḥ – Glycyrrhiza glabra. This Basti is called Siddha Basti.

द्विपञ्चमूलत्रिफलाफलबिल्वानि पाचयेत् ॥ ३४ ॥ गोमूत्रे तेन पिष्टैश्च पाठावत्सकतोयदैः ।
सफलैः क्षौद्रतैलाभ्यां क्षारेण लवणेन च ॥ ३५ ॥
युक्तो वस्तिः कफव्याधिपाण्डुरोगविषूचिषु ।
शुक्रानिलविबन्धेषु बस्त्याटोपे च पूजितः ॥ ३६ ॥
Dashamoola (group of ten roots), Triphala, fruits of Aegle marmelos are cooked in cow urine, filtered, is added with paste of pāṭhā – Cissampelos pareira, vatsaka – Holarrhena antidysenterica, toyadaiḥ – Cyperus rotundus, saphalaiḥ – Randia dumetorum, Honey, sesame oil, alkali prepared of Hordeum vulgare, rock salt. This Basti (is useful in Kapha disorders, Anemia, initial stages of liver disorder, viṣūciṣu – gastroenteritis it is praised for one lack of flow of Shukra and flatus, in relieving constipation pain and discomfort in urinary bladder.

Raja Yapana Basti

मुस्तापाठामृतैरण्डबलारास्नापुनर्नवाः ।
मञ्जिष्ठारग्वधोशीरत्रायमाणाक्षरोहिणीः ॥ ३७ ॥
कनीयः पञ्चमूलं च पालिकं मदनाष्टकम् ।
जलाढके पचेत्तच्च पादशेषं परिस्रुतम् ॥ ३८ ॥
क्षीरद्विप्रस्थसंयुक्तं क्षीरशेषं पुनः पचेत् ।
सपादजाङ्गलरसः ससर्पिर्मधुसैन्धवः ॥ ३९ ॥
पिष्टैर्यष्टीमिशिश्यामाकलिङ्गकरसाञ्जनैः ।
वस्तिः सुखोष्णो मांसाग्निबलशुक्रविवर्धनः ॥ ४० ॥
वातासृङ्मोहमेहार्शोगुल्मविण्मूत्रसङ्ग्रहान् ।
विषमज्वरवीसर्पवर्ध्माध्मानप्रवाहिकाः ॥ ४१ ॥
वङ्क्षणोरुकटीकुक्षिमन्याश्रोत्रशिरोरुजः ।
हन्यादसृग्दरोन्मादशोफकासाश्मकुण्डलान् ॥ ४२ ॥ चक्षुष्यः पुत्रदो राजा यापनानां रसायनम् ।
One Pala (48 grams) each of mustā – Cyperus rotundus, pāṭhā – Cissampelos pareira, amṛta – Tinospora cordifolia, iraṇḍa – Ricinus communis, balā – Sida cordifolia, rāsnā – Pluchea lanceolata, punarnavāḥ – Boerhavia diffusa, mañjiṣṭha – Rubia cordifolia, āragvadho – Cassia fistula, uśīra – Vetiveria zizanioides, trāyamāṇā – Gentiana kurroo, akṣa – Terminalia bellerica, rohiṇīḥ – Picrorhiza kurroa, and herbs of Kaniya (hrsva) Pancamula, Brihati – Solanum indicum, Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum, Gokshura – Tribulus – Tribulus terrestris, Shalaparni – Desmodiumgangeticum, Prishniparni – Urariapicta and madanāṣṭakam – Randia dumetorum eight by number are all cooked in an Adhaka (3 litre 72 ml) of water, decoction reduced to one – fourth and filtered; two prastha (1536 ml) of milk and one fourth (the quantity of the decoction) juice of meat of animals of arid regions are added together and boiled again till only the milk remains; with ghee, and rock salt and the paste of yaṣṭī – Glycyrrhiza glabra, miśi – Anethum sowa, śyāmā – Callicarpa macrophylla, kaliṅgaka – Holarrhena antidysenterica and rasāñjanaiḥ – extract of Berberis aristata are added and enema liquid prepared, administered comfortably warm. This enema increases the growth of muscles, digestive fire, strength and semen, cures disorders of Vatasrak (gout), delusion, diabetes, haemorrhoids, abdominal tumour, accumulation of feces and urine, irregular fevers, herpes, scrotal enlargement, distension of the abdomen, dysentery, pain in the groin, thigh, waist, abdomen, nape of the neck, ears, and head, cures menorrhagia, insanity, dropsy, cough, urinary calculi, pain in the urinary bladder; it is good for the eyes (vision), putrado – bestows children. It is the king among Yapana, a kind of enema and a rejuvenator.

Dashamuladi Basti

मृगाणां लघुवद्राणां दशमूलस्य चाम्भसा ॥ ४३ ॥
हपुषामिशिगाङ्गेयीकल्कैर्वातहरः परम् ।
निरूहोऽत्यर्थवृष्यश्च महास्नेहसमन्वितः ॥ ४४ ॥
Meat of animals of small size (rabbit, deer etc.) and big size (boar, buffalo etc.) boiled in the decoction of Dasamula – Brihati – Solanum indicum
Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum
Gokshura – Tribulus – Tribulus terrestris
Shalaparni – Desmodium gangeticum
Prishniparni – Uraria picta
Bilva – Bael tree – Aegle marmelos
Agnimantha – Premna mucronata
Shyonaka – Oroxylum indicum
Patala – Stereospermum suaveolens
Gambhari – Gmelina arborea
with paste of hapuṣā – Juniperus communis, miśi – Anethum sowa, gāṅgeyī – Cyperus rotundus (then filtered) and administered as enema is best to mitigate vata. The same decoction boiled with the Mahasneha (four facts ghee, oil, fat and marrow) is a highly valuable aphrodisiac.

Bala Shukrakara Basti

मयूरं पक्षपित्तान्त्रपादविट्तुण्डवर्जितम् ।
लघुना पञ्चमूलेन पालिकेन समन्वितम् ॥ ४५ ॥ पक्त्वा क्षीरजले क्षीरशेषं सघृतमाक्षिकम् ।
तद्विदारीकणायष्टीशताह्वाफलकल्कवत् ॥ ४६ ॥ वस्तिरीषत्पटुयुतः परमं बलशुक्रकृत् ।
Peacock devoid of its feathers, bile, intestine, legs, excreta and beak (only the flesh of a peacock killed just then) along with one Pala (48 grams) each of herbs of laghuPancamula –
Brihati – Solanum indicum
Kantakari – Solanum xanthocarpum
Gokshura – Tribulus – Tribulus terrestris
Shalaparni – Desmodium gangeticum
Prishniparni – Uraria picta
is boiled in water, mixed with equal quantity of milk and reduced till only milk remains, It is then (filtered and) mixed with ghee, honey and the paste of vidārī – Pueraria tuberosa, kaṇā – Piper longum, yaṣṭī – Glycyrrhiza glabra, śatāhvā – Anethum sowa and phala – Randia dumetorum and little quantity of salt, Used as enema it especially produces strength and semen.

Recipes prepared with meat and fishes

कल्पनेयं पृथक्कार्या तित्तिरिप्रभृतिष्वपि ॥ ४७ ॥
विष्किरेषु समस्तेषु प्रतुदप्रसहेषु च।
जलचारिषु तद्वच्च मत्स्येषु क्षीरवर्जिता ॥ ४८ ॥ Recipes can be prepared in the same way separately, with meat of sparrow bird etc., belonging to the groups of Vikskira, Pratuda and Prasaha similarly with Jalacara groups (vide chapter 6 of Sutrasthana), without adding of milk in case of fishes.

Vajikarana Basti

गोधानकुलमार्जारशल्यकोन्दुरजं पलम् ।
पृथग्दशपलं क्षीरे पञ्चमूलं च साधयेत् ॥ ४९ ॥
तत्पयः फलवैदेहीकल्कद्विलवणान्वितम् ।
ससितातैलमध्वाज्यो वस्तिर्योज्यो रसायनम् ॥ ५० ॥
व्यायाममथितोरस्कक्षीणेन्द्रियबलौजसाम् ।
विबद्धशुक्रविण्मूत्रखुडवातविकारिणाम् ॥ ५१ ॥
गजवाजिरथक्षोभभग्नजर्जरितात्मनाम् ।
पुनर्नवत्वं कुरुते वाजीकरणमुत्तमम् ॥ ५२ ॥
Ten Pala (480 grams) each of the flesh of godhā – iguana lizard, nakula – mongoose, cat, śalyaka – porcupine, and rat / mouse taken individually, should be processed in milk along with pancamula. That milk is then (filtered) added with the paste of phala – Randia dumetorum, vaidehī – Piper longum and the two lavana (salts) (Saindhava – rock salt and Souvarchala – Sochal salt), with sugar, oil of sesame, honey, and ghee and administered as an enema. It is a rejuvenator for those who are debilitated by physical exercise, injury to the chest (lungs), weak sense organs, poor strength and loss of ojas; it relieves the obstruction of the semen, feces and urine; cures khuda (gout) and other diseases of vata origin. It makes the persons new, who are greatly debilitated by riding on elephants, broses or chariot, who are fractured and greatly wounded; and it is a best aphodisiac.

Atmaguptadi Basti

सिद्धेन पयसा भोज्यमात्मगुप्तोच्चटेक्षुरैः ।
After taking enema prepared with ātmagupta – Mucuna pruriens, (gunja) – Abrus precatorius and ikṣuraiḥ – Astercantha longifolia, ­the person should take food along with milk.

Anuvasana Basti, (Sneha) Basti Kalpa: Fat enema

स्नेहांश्चायन्त्रणान् सिद्धान् सिद्धद्रव्यैः प्रकल्पयेत् ॥ ५३ ॥
दोषघ्नाः सपरीहारा वक्ष्यन्ते स्नेहवस्तयः ।
Sneha basti kalpa – recipes of fat – enema retention enema should be prepared with harmless herbs, of proven efficacy. oil – enema which mitigate the Doshas and which are harmless will be described now.

Vatahara Basti Kalpa: Recipes to cure diseases of vata

दशमूलं बलां रास्नामश्वगन्धां पुनर्नवाम् ॥ ५४ ॥ गुडूच्यैरण्डभूतीकभार्गीवृषकरोहिषम् ।
शतावरीं सहचरं काकनासां पलांशकम् ॥ ५५ ॥ यवमाषातसीकोलकुलत्थान् प्रसृतोन्मितान् ।
वहे विपाच्य तोयस्य द्रोणशेषेण तेन च ॥ ५६ ॥
पचेत्तैलाढकं पेष्यैर्जीवनीयैः पलोन्मितैः ।
अनुवासनमित्येतत्सर्ववातविकारनुत् ॥ ५७ ॥

Balāṃ – Sida cordifolia, rāsnāṃ – Pluchea lanceolata, aśvagandhāṃ – Withania somnifera, punarnavām – Boerhavia diffusa, guḍūcī – Tinospora cordifolia, eraṇḍa – Ricinus communis, bhūtīka – Trachyspermum ammi, bhārgī – Clerodendrum serratum, vṛṣaka – Adhathoda vasica, rohiṣam – Cymbopogon martinii, śatāvarīṃ – Asparagus racemosus, sahacaraṃ – Casearis esculanta, kākanāsāṃ – Peristrophe bicalyculata; one prastha (768 ml) each of yava – Hordeum vulgare, māṣa – Vigna mungo, atasī – Linum ustitissimum, kola – Ziziphus mauritiana and kulatthān – Dolichos biflorus are boiled in one Vaha (4 Drona – 49.152 liters) of water and decoction reduced to one drona (12.288 liters) and filtered; next one Adhaka (3.072 ml) of sesame oil and the paste of one Pala (48 grams) each of the herbs of Jivaniya gana (chapter 15 of sutrasthana), and medicated oil prepared. This, used for Anuvasana basti (retention enema oil – enema) cures all the diseases of vata or origin.
आनूपानां वसा तद्वज्जीवनीयोपसाधिता ।
शताह्वाचिरिबिल्वाम्लैस्तैलं सिद्धं समीरणे ॥ ५८ ॥
सैन्धवेनाग्निवर्णेन तप्तं चानिलजिद्घृतम् ।
Vasa (muscle – fat) of animals of marshy region processed with herbs of Jivaniya gana acts similarly. Medicated oil prepared with śatāhvā – Anethum sowa, ciribilva – Holoptelea integrifolia and sour liquids samīraṇe – mitigate vata ghee prepared by immersing rock salt, made red hot (and administered as enema) anilajit – vanquishes Anila (Vata).

Vatapittahara Kalpa: Jivantyadi Yamaka

जीवन्तीं मदनं मेदां श्रावणीं मधुकं बलाम् ॥ ५९ ॥
शताह्वर्षभकौ कृष्णां काकनासां शतावरीम् ।
स्वगुप्तां क्षीरकाकोलीं कर्कटाख्यां शठीं वचाम् ॥ ६० ॥
पिष्ट्वा तैलघृतं क्षीरे साधयेत्तच्चतुर्गुणे ।
बृंहणं वातपित्तघ्नं बलशुक्राग्निवर्धनम् ॥ ६१ ॥
रजःशुक्रामयहरं पुत्रीयं चानुवासनम् ।
jīvantīṃ – Leptadenia reticulata,
madanaṃ – Randia dumetorum,
medāṃ – Polygonatum cirrhifolium,
śrāvaṇīṃ – Sphaeranthus indicus,
madhukaṃ – Glycyrrhiza glabra,
balām – Sida cordifolia,
śatāhva – Anethum sowa,
ṛṣabhakau – Manilkara hexandra,
kṛṣṇāṃ – Piper nigrum,
kākanāsāṃ – Tricosanthes tricuspidata,
śatāvarīm – Asparagus racemosus,
svaguptāṃ – Mucuna pruriens,
kṣīrakākolīṃ – Roscoea purpurea,
karkaṭākhyāṃ – Pistacia chinensis,
śaṭhīṃ – Hedychium spicatum
vacām – and Acorus calamus
piṣṭvā – are made into a paste
and added to the mixture of oil of sesame, ghee and four parts of cow milk boiled and medicated fat prepared. Used as retention enema, this is stoutening the body, mitigates Vata and Pitta, increases strength, semen and digestive fire, cures the disorders of menstruation, semen and bestows male progeny.

Kaphahara Basti Kalpa: Recipes to cure diseases of Kapha: Saindhavadi thailam

सैन्धवं मदनं कुष्ठं शताह्वा निचुलो वचा ॥ ६२ ॥
ह्रीवेरं मधुकं भार्गी देवदारु सकट्फलम् ।
नागरं पुष्करं मेदा चविका चित्रकः शठी ॥ ६३ ॥
विडङ्गातिविषे श्यामा हरेणुर्नीलिनी स्थिरा ।
बिल्वाजमोदचपला दन्ती रास्ना च तैः समैः ॥ ६४ ॥
साध्यमेरण्डतैलं वा तैलं वा कफरोगनुत् ।
वर्ध्मोदावर्तगुल्मार्शःप्लीहमेहाढ्यमारुतान् ॥ ६५ ॥
आनाहमश्मरीं चाशु हन्यात्तदनुवासनम् ।
Equal quantity of Rock salt, madanaṃ – Randia dumetorum, kuṣṭhaṃ – Saussurea lappa, śatāhvā – Anethum sowa, niculo – Barringtonia accuntangula, vacā – Acorus calamus, hrīveraṃ – Pavonia odorata, madhukaṃ – Glycyrrhiza glabra, bhārgī – Clerodendrum serratum, devadāru – Cedrus deodara, kaṭphalam – Myrica nagi, nāgaraṃ – Zingiber oficinale, puṣkaraṃ – Inula racemosa, medā – Polygonatum cirrhifolium, cavikā – Scindapsus officinalis, citrakaḥ – Plumbago zeylanica, śaṭhī – Hedychium spicatum, viḍaṅga – Embelia ribes, ativiṣe – Aconitum heterophyllum, śyāmā – Ipomoea petaloides, hareṇu: – Pisum sativum, nīlinī – Indigofera tinctoria, sthirā – Desmodium gangeticum, bilva – Aegle marmelos, ajamoda – Trachyspermum ammi, capalā – Vigna unguiculata, dantī – Baliospermum montanum, Pluchea lanceolata (are boiled in water and decoction prepared) and mixed either with oil of Ricinus communis or oil of Sesamum indicum and medicated oil prepared, This used as enema cures quickly the diseases of kapha origin, scrotal hernia, upward movement of Vata, gulma – abdominal tumour, haemorrhodis, diseases of the spleen, diabetes, gout flatulence and urinary stone.

Kaphahara Bastikalpa: Recipes to cure diseases of Kapha

साधितं पञ्चमूलेन तैलं बिल्वादिनाऽथवा ॥ ६६ ॥
कफघ्नं कल्पयेत्तैलं द्रव्यैर्वा कफघातिभिः ।
फलैरष्टगुणैश्चाम्लैः सिद्धमन्वासनं कफे ॥ ६७ ॥
Medicated oil prepared with herbs of (laghu) Pancamula or bilvadi Pancamula (and administered as enema), mitigates kapha. Medicated oil prepared with other herbs which mitigate kapha, prepared along with phalai: – Randia dumetorum and eight times of sour liquids, this lubricating enema is good for mitigating kapha.

Management of blocked mild enema

मृदुवस्तिजडीभूते तीक्ष्णोऽन्यो वस्तिरिष्यते ।
तीक्ष्णैर्विकर्षिते स्निग्धो मधुरः शिशिरो मृदुः ॥ ६८ ॥ तीक्ष्णत्वं मूत्रपील्वग्निलवणक्षारसर्षपैः ।
प्राप्तकालं विधातव्यं क्षीराज्याद्यैस्तु मार्दवम् ॥ ६९ ॥ Enema liquids of mild potency when stagnated inside the abdomen, another enema of strong potency should be administered. When the interior (of the rectum and colon) becomes irritated by enema liquids of strong potency, then another soft enema which is prepared from fats, herbs of sweet taste and cold potency made by addition of herbs such as cow urine, pīlu – Salvadora persica, agni – Plumbago zeylanica, lavaṇa – rock salt, kṣāra – alkali, sarṣapaiḥ – Brassica nigra (etc.) and of mild potency by the addition of milk, ghee etc. should be administered at the appropriate time.

Basti to cure diseases

बलकालरोगदोषप्रकृतीः प्रविभज्य योजितो वस्तिः ।
स्वैः स्वैरौषधवर्गैः स्वान् स्वान् रोगान्निवर्तयति ॥ ७० ॥
Enema liquids prepared with herbs belonging to the herbs groups concerned with (mitigating) each Dosha respectively and administered as enema deciding the strength (of the patient), the time, the disease, the Dosha and the type of constitution (of the patient) bring about the cure of the diseases caused by each of them respectively.

Hot or cold Basti

उष्णार्तानां शीताञ्छीतार्तानां तथा सुखोष्णांश्च ।
तद्योग्यौषधयुक्तान् वस्तीन् सन्तर्क्य युञ्जीत ॥ ७१ ॥
Patients suffering from heat (increase of body temperature, feeling of burning sensation inside etc.) should be administered cold enema while those suffering from cold (shivering feeling of cold inside etc.) should be administered comfortably warm enema. Such enema shall be administered, prepared with respectively appropriate herbs, selected after careful consideration.

Contra indication for stoutening Basti

वस्तीन्न बृंहणीयान् दद्याद्व्याधिषु विशोधनीयेषु ।
मेदस्विनो विशोध्या ये च नराः कुष्ठमेहार्ताः ॥ ७२ ॥
Enemas which are Brmhaniya (stoutening the body) should not be given in diseases which require prefatory therapies to persons who are very fatty, who are to undergo purifactory therapies and to those suffering from skin disease and diabetes.

Contra indication for Shodhana basti (cleansing/ weight reducing)

न क्षीणक्षतदुर्बलमूर्छितकृशशुष्कशुद्धदेहानाम् ।
दद्याद्विशोधनीयान् दोषनिबद्धायुषो ये च ॥ ७३ ॥
Enemas which are visodhaniya (purifactory) should not be given to persons who are wasted (thin), wounded, debilitated, fainted (unconscious), emaciated and dry (by loss or depletion of Dhatus) and to whom sodana (purifactory therapies) have already been administered, and whose life is bound up with the Doshas (who might die if the Doshas are expelled out of the body).

इति श्री वैद्यपति सिंहगुप्तसूनु श्रीमद्वाग्भटविरचितायामष्टाङ्गहृदयसंहितायां पञ्चमे कल्पसिद्धिस्थाने बस्तिकल्पो नाम चतुर्थोऽध्याय: ॥ ४ ॥
